SK geo centric produced renewable para-xylene (PX), a key component in polyester production, using renewable naphtha supplied by Neste. This marks the company's first venture into creating renewable para-xylene, with enough material produced to make approximately 100,000 T-shirts.
The polyester manufactured through this process is slated for use in sportswear products by Japan's The North Face, owned by Goldwin. The entire production chain, from renewable naphtha to final clothing products, is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 to 85 percent compared to fossil fuel-based methods.
"This consortium represents the first instance where various companies have collaborated to produce sustainable polyester for final clothing products with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions," said an SK geo centric official. "We will strive to create greater synergy, building on this initial effort."
