SEOUL, June 27 (AJU PRESS) - North Korea and Russia are set to resume passenger train services next month, amid deepening ties between the two countries.
At the opening ceremony of an expo in Vladivostok early this week, Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of Russia’s Primorsky Krai, announced the impending resumption.
The development follows a recent summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang, where they agreed to strengthen their ties further by signing a defense pact.
The railway service connecting Vladivostok with North Korea's easternmost border city of Rason had been halted for about four years due to COVID-19 concerns.
Tourism between the two countries is also expected to revive, with Russian travel agency Vostok Intour now offering more packaged tours to North Korea. Previously focused primarily on Pyongyang, these tours now include additional destinations like Hamhung.
