Samsung SDI unveils upgraded battery box for global energy storage push

SEOUL, June 19 (AJU PRESS) - Samsung SDI Co. unveiled an upgraded version of its Samsung Battery Box (SBB) energy storage system at a major industry fair in Germany on Wednesday, aiming to strengthen its position in the global market for renewable energy storage.

The Korean battery maker showcased the SBB 1.5 with increased capacity and enhanced safety features at the Intersolar Europe trade fair, which opened in Munich for a three-day run. The new model boasts a total capacity of 5.26 megawatt-hours, representing a 37 percent higher energy density compared to its predecessor.

A key safety enhancement is the enhanced direct injection technology, designed to prevent the spread of fires by injecting extinguishing agents directly into the module containing the affected cell.

"Samsung SDI plans to lead the global ESS market by launching diverse product lineups that leverage our 'super-gap' technological competitiveness, such as the SBB 1.5, while pioneering new markets arising from the acceleration of the AI era," said Choi Yoon-ho, CEO of Samsung SDI.

Starting in 2026, the company plans to implement a two-track strategy for its energy storage system batteries, combining high-energy-density nickel-based cells with lower-cost lithium iron phosphate cells. Additionally, Samsung SDI will supply high-output cells for uninterruptible power supplies to meet the increasing demand from data centers.
