SEOUL -- Girl band NewJeans will receive Billboard's annual award given to influential women in the music industry. Along with American singer Maren Morris and Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems, the five-member band will be honored at YouTube Theater, a live theater in Los Angeles.
NewJeans, which debuted in July 2022, has gained recognition for its exceptional dance performances and singing skills across different genres, including R&B and hip hop. The sister band of BTS has captivated global fans through dance songs such as Attention, Ditto, and OMG. Attention was selected by Billboard as one of the top 25 K-pop songs of 2022. OMG was ranked seventh among 74 songs of the first half of 2023 by American magazine Rolling Stone.
NewJeans was included in the honoree list for the "2024 Billboard Women In Music Awards." Group members will lift the award trophy for the "Group of the Year" category at YouTube Theater on March 6. "The South Korean group made a big splash in August 2023 when their second EP (extended play), Get Up, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1, displacing Taylor Swift's Speak Now (Taylor's Version). The group also had five Hot 100 hits, topped by Super Shy, which rode the chart for two months," Billboard said.
NewJeans achieved the milestone by amassing more than three billion streams on Spotify, the world's top music streaming service, only about one year and three months after its debut. According to the streaming service operator, songs released by group members were 3,065,703,564 times as of November 7, 2023. The prominent girl group is under the guidance of Min Hee-jin, a genius idol incubator who planned concepts for SM Entertainment bands such as Girls' Generation and Red Velvet.
