SEOUL -- Girl band NewJeans won the grand prize for the digital songs at South Korea's annual music awards. The five-member band lifted the top award trophy at the Golden Disc Awards with Ditto, the group's global hit song released in December 2022. The dance-pop song with a nostalgic vibe garnered more than 520 million streams on Spotify, the world's top music streaming service.
NewJeans, which debuted in July 2022, was formed under the command of Min Hee-jin, a genius idol incubator who planned concepts for SM Entertainment bands such as Girls' Generation, SHINee, and Red Velvet. Min is currently the head of ADOR, a subsidiary label of the agency of BTS. Under Min's guidance, group members released global hit songs such as Attention, Hype Boy, Super Shy, ETA, and Ditto.
"We hope NewJeans becomes an even more promising team in the future. Thank you always, and we love you. Happy New Year," NewJeans said on Instagram on January 7 after winning the 38th Golden Disc Awards' grand prize. The Golden Disc Awards is South Korea's oldest music awards ceremony which began in 1986. At the music event held in Jakarta, Min Hee-jin received the award for the best producer. Other prize winners include Seventeen, Stray Kids, BTS' Jungkook, IVE, and Le Sserafim.
NewJeans achieved the milestone of accumulating over three billion streams on Spotify, only about one year and three months after its debut. According to the streaming service provider, songs released by group members were 3,065,703,564 times as of November 7, 2023.
