SEOUL -- South Korea's major telecom company KT has partnered with Amano Korea, a parking control system provider, to make its first step into the smart parking service market. Although the adoption of autonomous vehicles has gained momentum in South Korea, human drivers are mainly still in charge of parking to prevent unexpected situations.

Smart parking incorporates artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and cloud computing to improve parking efficiency. The solution connected to mobile phones or PC provides various information such as the number of available parking spots in real-time. Users can also remotely check the condition of their vehicles using smartphones.

KT said in a statement that the company signed an agreement with Amano Korea to cooperate in the smart parking business. KT's artificial intelligence infrastructure will be combined with Amano Korea's parking control system. "We will lead the next-generation smart parking market by creating synergy based on the know-how of the two companies," KT's deputy director Lee Sung-hwan said in a statement on March 22.

South Korea's capital city has unveiled its scheme to adopt more than 300 autonomous vehicles and related services by 2026. In February 2022, an autonomous vehicle-hailing service made its debut in Seoul's western district with the deployment of four self-driving vehicles. Self-driving cars can be hailed from any location on the circulation routes using a designated smartphone app.

In December 2022, two self-driving buses were deployed to the 44.8-kilometer return bus route that connects the central city of Sejong to Cheongju some 22.4 kilometers (13.9 miles) north of Sejong, and back.
