SEOUL -- LG Electronics is seeking to strengthen its global competitiveness in the global automobile market by receiving Cybersecurity Management System (CSMS) certification. The certification allows the electronics giant to provide various components including infotainment systems mainly in Europe.
The South Korean electronics maker said in a statement on February 20 that it has received a vehicle CSMS certification from the international certification testing organization, TUV Rheinland. This certification enables LG Electronics to supply carmakers in the member countries of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) with infotainment systems and telematics components equipped with cybersecurity.
In January 2021, the UNECE officially enacted regulations related to vehicle cybersecurity. Since July 2022, all vehicles under development must receive CSMS certification before they can be launched in UNECE-contracted countries.
The CSMS certification process verifies whether security solutions are properly applied throughout the vehicles' design, development, production, and post-management processes by assuming various scenarios and evaluating capabilities thoroughly through simulated hacking tests.
LG said that the company applied strict self-test processes that exceed the standard requirements for cybersecurity-related UNECE regulations. The South Korean electronics maker will also target the North American market and other regions including Asia to meet cybersecurity-related demands.
The electronics giant has been continuously securing necessary cybersecurity capabilities and competitiveness in the automobile industry by acquiring Cybellum, an Israeli automotive cybersecurity company, in 2021.
