Government data showed that the capital city had 59,727 fire hydrants as of 2021. Jongno, an office district located at the heart of Seoul, had the most fire hydrants with 2,865.
Seoul said in a statement that the internet of things (IoT)-based fire hydrant solution will be demonstrated in 13 areas in Jongno starting on February 2022. A pillar equipped with various equipment such as a motion detection sensor, a warning light, and a speaker will be installed near a fire hydrant. Closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) will be used to monitor roads for fire trucks in real-time.
"We hope the IoT-based management system will greatly help to monitor fire hydrants and operate fire engines within the golden hour," an unnamed Seoul official said in a statement on January 31. The capital city said the demonstration will be expanded to other areas after a test run for a year.
Seoul said the smart solution will be also used to monitor illegal parking near fire hydrants. Human inspectors will notify drivers to move their vehicles so that fire trucks can access the accident area.
