In order to send and receive data streams through two channels on one frequency without radio signals interfering with each other, dual polarization technology is required. Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology is used to transmit different data streams. MIMO technology also allows one antenna array to perform the transmission of data streams without having to use two separate arrays to save space and costs.
The National Radio Research Agency said that the agency transferred the localized 5G dual polarization technology to Comotech for commercialization of 28 gigahertz-band 5G radio wave detection antenna. The agency will receive two percent of annual sales generated by the localized 5G antenna. Currently, South Korea relies on foreign 5G dual polarization antenna which costs about 14 million won ($10,711) each.
"Through the antenna technology transfer, we will be able to provide radio wave-detecting antenna at about 10 percent of the price of foreign products," Comotech CEO Kim Young-soo said in a statement on December 16. The state radio research agency will continue to develop and upgrade the high-speed 5G antenna detection technology until 2025.
