SEOUL -- LG Electronics tied up with a state-sponsored research body to verify and standardize its technology that prevents fire accidents caused by home appliance electrical arcs that take place because of different reasons such as the loose connection of power supply and damaged cables.

According to data released by the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation (KESCO), more than 80 percent of electrical fires were generated by electric arc flashes in 2021. LG Electronics' technology automatically blocks power supplied from indoor units to outdoor units when arcs occur in power lines and outlets of air conditioners.

LG Electronics partnered with the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) to verify and standardize its fire prevention system that can detect arcs and shut off the power without installing a physical breaker. The company will apply its technology to air conditioners first and other home appliances later.

"We will continue to try hard to provide a different level of customer experience that uses many different home appliances more safely in daily life, including LG Electronics' premium air conditioners," LG Electronics vice president Lee Jae-sung said in a statement on October 12.
