Seoul experiences greatest downpour in 80 years

Seoul and its surrounding cities have experienced the greatest downpour in 80 years, which has inundated homes, cars, buildings, and subway stations and left seven people dead and six more missing. Parts of Seoul, the western port city of Incheon, and the surrounding Gyeonggi Province had severe rainfall of over 100 millimeters per hour on August 8 at night. In Seoul’s southern district of Dongjak, the amount of precipitation per hour peaked at 141.5 mm, the greatest amount since 1942.

President Yoon holds emergency meeting to cope with downpour

In response to the greatest downpour in 80 years, which left seven people dead and six others missing, President Yoon Suk-yeol presided over an emergency meeting on August 9. The conference was convened in Seoul's government complex's disaster and safety situation room a day after intense rainstorms battered the city and its environs, flooding homes, cars, buildings, and subway stations. He sent orders to local governments, forestry, and firefighting agencies on August 8 to devise plans to evacuate citizens from dangerous locations and stop fatalities.

S. Korean golfer Chun In-gee enters top 10 in world rankings

Following a runner-up finish at the final major championship of the season, South Korean LPGA player Chun In-gee has reentered the top 10 for the first time in more than four years. In the most recent world rankings revealed on August 9, Chun moved up one spot to No. 10. She last appeared in the top 10 in March 2018, when she was placed eighth. Chun occasionally occupied the No. 3 position in late 2016 and early 2017. Chun was 35th at the start of 2022.

SK Geocentric to build packaging material plant in China

To increase its footprint in Asia's biggest market, SK Geocentric, a chemical wing of South Korea's conglomerate SK Group, unveiled its scheme to build a plant in China that will develop a high value-added packaging material. According to SK Geocentric, the factory would be developed in a petrochemical complex in Lianyungang, a city in northern Jiangsu Province, as part of a 6:4 joint venture with Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical Co.

S. Korea adds some 149,000 new COVID cases

South Korea gained 149,897 new COVID-19 infections, the most since April 13 when the total reached 195,387. This brought the overall caseload to 20,694,239 cases. 588 international cases are included in the total.
