SEOUL -- LIG Nex1, a defense contractor in South Korea, tied up with ICEYE, a Finnish microsatellite manufacturer, to push for cooperation in satellite business in the emerging commercial space industry.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed at the Farnborough International Airshow, a trade exhibition in England,  LIG Nex1 and ICEYE would cooperate in microsatellites, video utilization and services, and the exchange of technology.

Through cooperation with ICEYE, LIG Nex1 aims to expand its capabilities in synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) image processing to cluster satellites. SAR is a form of radar used to create two-dimensional images or three-dimensional reconstructions of objects, such as landscapes. The Finnish company is developing a constellation of microsatellites equipped with SARs in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).

LIG Nex1 said that the image processing of all-weather sensor SARs is gaining importance due to the endless use of high-resolution images, wide-area images, change detection, and 3D images for disaster monitoring and damage analysis.

For its "Space Pioneer" program, South Korea has vowed to create a self-sustaining industrial ecosystem and cultivate innovative companies like Space X. The Seoul government has disclosed the goal of producing small low-orbit satellites weighing under 100 kilograms.
