SEOUL -- SK ecoplant, a major waste management company affiliated with South Korea's SK Group, tied up with a domestic environmental venture enterprise to develop a new energy-saving water treatment solution that can compete with proprietary technologies possed by only a few foreign companies.

SK ecoplant said it has signed a joint technology development agreement with Pure Envitech, a membrane specialist company that produces equipment for sewage and wastewater treatment.

The two companies would jointly secure new membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) technologies that allow for the low-energy delivery of oxygen directly to bacteria growing on membranes with little resistance. MABR is energy-intensive, compared to conventional systems that need lots of pressure to get air through the water. The short contact time between oxygen and microorganisms reduces efficiency.

SK ecoplant would lead the development of technologies and spread the application of MABR technology. The goal is to contribute to the energy reduction of aging domestic water treatment facilities by promoting the localization and verification of MABR technology.

"SK ecoplant will lead the differentiation of environmental business technologies by applying AI technology to incineration facilities and developing new solutions to reduce power consumption in water treatment," SK ecoplant's Eco Lab Center head Kim Byung-kwon said in a statement on July 7. The company has acquired environmental companies to solidify its status as an ecological and energy solution provider.
