SEOUL -- GS Engineering and Construction, a major builder in South Korea, has secured an order from a U.S. energy company to provide modules for a hydrogen production facility to be built in the city of Lancaster, California. The plant employs a stacked modular design built for rapid scale and linear distributed expansion at low costs.

GS E&C said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with SG H2 Lancaster LLC, a special purpose company established by SG H2 Energy to build a hydrogen production plant capable of producing up to 11 tons of green hydrogen per day by processing 40,000 tons of recycled waste annually. The South Korean company is in charge of module design and production.

GS E&C said its modularization technology can reduce investment costs and shorten construction periods. It is the first South Korean construction company to export hydrogen plant modules.

Traditional green hydrogen made from electrolysis is expensive to produce and requires tremendous amounts of renewable power and water. SG H2 produces high purity hydrogen from any kind of waste using a plasma-enhanced thermal catalytic conversion process optimized with oxygen-enriched gas. The process extracts all carbon from the waste feedstock and produces no toxins or pollution.

GS E& hopes to participate in SG H2's hydrogen plant projects in North America and other regions, as well as a clean energy project using plasma technology in South Korea's southeastern industrial port of Ulsan. "With our entry into the green hydrogen plant sector, which is expected to keep growing in the future, we will establish partnerships with leading companies in the green hydrogen field and expand our eco-friendly business," said GS E&C president Huh Yoon-hong.

In South Korea, plasma treatment for the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) has been studied and developed by the state-run Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) and a venture company. KIMM's technology has been demonstrated at POSCO Energy's liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant to create a business model.
