LAS VEGAS -- Samsung Electronics unveiled its newest MICRO LED and Neo QLED to be showcased at CES 2022, an annual trade fair in Las Vegas. With advancements in picture and sound quality, more screen size options, customizable accessories and an upgraded interface, the company said the new screens provide life-like images, immersive sound and hyper-personalized experiences.
Micro LED uses micrometer-sized LED lights to eliminate the backlight and color filters utilized in conventional displays. Compared to OLED displays, Micro LED displays have higher brightness and a wider range of colors. The new LED technology does not have luminance decay issues commonly found on OLED displays. With a higher density than normal LED TVs, Micro LED is suitable for displaying ultra-high-resolution video content.
Samsung said that MICRO LED offers a best-in-class picture quality thanks to 25 million micrometer-sized LEDs that individually produce light and color, creating an incredibly immersive experience through impressive depth, vibrant colors and a heightened level of clarity and contrast.
MICRO LED will be unveiled in three different sizes -- 110 inches, 101 inches and 89 inches, Samsung said, adding MICRO LED can express lifelike colors, offering the finest control with over one million steps of brightness and color levels and delivering a true high dynamic range experience.
MICRO LED comes packed with enhanced usability and customization features. Samsung said the art mode allows consumers to turn any room into an art gallery as they can select and display their favorite artwork or digital photography, with users viewing content from four different sources simultaneously. The Dolby Atmos system delivers a premier immersive audio experience with top, side and bottom channel speakers for breathtaking, multi-dimensional sound.
"With our new lineup of products, we are providing customers an entirely immersive video and audio experience that is customizable to their needs," Simon Sung in charge of sales and marketing at Samsung's visual display business, said in a statement on January 3.
Samsung said that Neo QLED would provide some of the most pristine images and immersive soundscapes possible. A new neo quantum processor introduces advanced contrast mapping with a back-light unit. The shape adaptive light technology leverages the processor to analyze lines, shapes and surfaces to control the shape of light from quantum mini LEDs, enhancing the brightness and accuracy of all shapes on the screen and resulting in outstanding image quality.
Neo QLED creates a greater sense of realism by determining and processing an object on the screen against its background to create a sense of depth, and its eye-comfort mode automatically adjusts the screen's brightness and tone based on a built-in light sensor and sunset and sunrise information. As the ambient light changes, the screen will gradually reduce the amount of light and offer warmer tones, adjusting the blue light levels accordingly, allowing for a more comfortable viewing experience at night by reducing the blue light which may affect one’s sleep quality.
With expanded bezel options, Samsung said there are endless possibilities of personalization with new displays, while soundbars provide an immersive, three-dimensional audio experience.
