Yonsei University professor selected to lead S. Korean team in joint 6G project with U.S.

SEOUL -- Chae Chan-Byoung, an Underwood distinguished professor in Yonsei University's school of integrated technology, was selected to lead South Korea's research team in a joint project with U.S. researchers to develop and commercialize 6G mobile telecommunication.

Chae's team will work with an American team led by Robert Heath, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the North Carolina State University. As prominent experts in wireless communication, Chae and Heath are IEEE Fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a professional association for electronic engineering and electrical engineering. IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.

The joint study was part of a joint research cooperation agreement signed in June 2021 between the Institute for Information communication Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP), a Seoul-based state body affiliated with the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the National Science Foundation (NSF), a U.S. agency that supports fundamental research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering.

"This task is to develop transmission source technology and build a testbed in the sub-THz band, which is considered a key technology in the 6G era," an unnamed Yonsei University official said in a statement on December 27. As a frontrunner in disseminating 5G mobile services, South Korea aims to achieve the world's first commercialization of 6G mobile telecommunication in 2028.
