SEOUL -- In an event watched by foreign guests from international classification societies and developers, Samsung Heavy Industries, a major shipbuilder in South Korea, has successfully demonstrated its liquefaction process called "SENSE Ⅳ" that can produce more than two million tons of liquefied natural gas annually and has high energy efficiency.
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) said the demonstration was carried out at its shipyard in the southern island of Geoje. SENSE IV can reduce power consumption required for the production of one ton of natural gas by up to 14 percent compared to the existing liquefaction process.
"With the successful development and demonstration of SENSE IV, product reliability in the full lineup of an LNG value chain such as production, transportation, storage, and supply has become stronger," said SHI's marine business division head Kang Young-kyu.
South Korean shipbuilders work hard to develop smart ships and secure a competitive edge in LNG-powered vessels. SHI has led the construction of LNG-powered ships thanks to growing demands for eco-friendly ships. In May 2021, SHI opened a test facility to develop and verify key technologies related to LNG liquefaction, regasification and re-liquefaction.
