SEOUL -- As a leading designer of 5G equipment and software in South Korea, Samsung Electronics unveiled a software-defined networking solution with new capabilities that would help mobile operators and enterprises manage networks more easily and rapidly introduce new 5G applications, services and infrastructures.

Software-defined networking (SDN), which makes networks agile and flexible, is a network architecture approach that enables the network to be centrally and intelligently controlled using software solutions. With an architectural shift from a hardware-based deployment to software-centric network design, SDN is highly secure, scalable and adaptable, especially helpful in advancing private networks.

Samsung said its SDN solution would enable mobile operators to offer optimal networks for various business models through end-to-end network slicing capability. Network slicing is a specific form of virtualization that allows multiple logical networks to run on top of shared physical network infrastructure. Security will be strengthened as each connected device must be certified in an independent network.

"Networks are becoming more agile with SDN technology in the 5G era. Samsung is proud to take part in this network evolution by offering a full lineup of SDN solutions and bringing more operational flexibility to 5G network management," Chong So-hyong, who heads software R&D at Samsung networks business, said in a statement on Jul 23.

Samsung’s SDN solution can serve multiple purposes in a single box and provides a simplified view of an end-to-end network, enabling more unified and consistent management. The company said its cloud-native, open source-based SDN solutions can integrate seamlessly with third-party switches and routers.
