SEOUL -- Like other South Korean shipbuilders working hard to strengthen their competitiveness with smart ship technologies, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering gets smarter by introducing advanced digital technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) into shipbuilding, management and test operation.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) said on April 8 that it has opened a digital production center at its shipyard in the southern island city of Geoje. The center consists of two sections -- smart production management and smart start-up testing.
"The digital production center will become a key facility for the establishment of smart shipyards, the future competitiveness of our company, and open the era of autonomous ship operations," DSME CEO Lee Sung-geun said in a statement. "It is a very meaningful achievement, as I think that we are at an innovation point to become a new future-oriented shipyard."
The center for smart production management shares real-time production information with IoT technology to help make quick decisions. It is possible to check the location of blocks under construction with drones in real-time, update various production information every minute on a large screen, and predict and simulate factors affecting production such as weather conditions.
With smart production management, DSME said it can improve productivity, prevent safety accidents, and enable smart management by utilizing information such as resources and energy usage in the shipyard.
The smart start-up center collects operating information about a start-up ship such as the performance and fuel consumption of equipment and provides technical support. Collected data can be applied to equipment optimization and improvement in advance through big data analysis.
Shipowners can get ways to reduce operating costs. The center can analyze the operation information of ships already delivered and provide solutions to ship owners. A virtual reality crew training program can be provided in the same environment as actual ships.
