Normally, modern vehicles are equipped with a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that uses sensors installed on each wheel to monitor the air pressure of tires in real-time. When the pressure is low, the vehicle alerts its driver. However, TPMS does not monitor the structural integrity of tires.
Hyundai said in a statement on March 11 that the motor group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hankook Tire to jointly develop a real-time tire monitoring technology and share data related to connected cars and tires. "Through strategic cooperation with Hyundai Motor Group, we will be able to provide a service with upgrade quality," a Hankook Tire official was quoted as saying.
The new technology will allow drivers to monitor the structural integrity of tires as well as air pressures in real-time. Drivers can check the wear and tear as well as changes in the shape of tires. It will also detect and analyze the style of driving and offer tire management services.
The cooperation agreement is part of Hyundai's big picture to expand its business scope into the total connected car management sector. In July 2020, Hyundai forged a data-sharing partnership with rent-a-car service companies including SK Car Rental and Lotte Rental. Based on the operation data of rental cars, Hyundai will develop car-sharing new service models tailor-made for customers.
