SEOUL -- SK Global Chemical will introduce pyrolysis oil technology from Brightmark LLC, a San Francisco-based company that provides clean energy generation solutions. Pyrolysis oil, sometimes known as bio-crude, is a synthetic fuel obtained by heating dried biomass without oxygen.
SK Global Chemical said in a statement on January 28 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Brightmark, on the commercialization of pyrolysis oil and facility investment.
Pyrolysis is a chemical recycling process that can convert plastics into high-quality oil. Chemical recycling is an attractive way to address the explosive growth of plastic waste and disposal problems.
SK Global Chemical, which is a unit of SK Innovation, promised to complete a business review by the first half of this year, saying Brightmark's technology would expedite waste plastic recycling. "Pyrolysis oil technology is an essential eco-friendly technology to fundamentally solve domestic waste plastic problems," said SK Global Chemical president Na Kyung-soo.
To reduce greenhouse gases and build a plastic virtuous cycle economy, SK has emphasized processing technology to use pyrolysis oil extracted from waste plastic as a raw material for plastic products instead of naphtha
