SEOUL -- LS Cable & Systems, a major South Korean cable maker, has commercialized telecom cables with carbon fiber instead of copper and aluminum that had been used as shielding materials. The company is working on the industrial use of carbon fiber cables.
Cables that use carbon fiber were up to 20 percent lighter and improved flexibility and durability by more than 30 percent, LS Cable said, adding it has completed preparations for the mass-production of carbon fiber LAN cables that are used for facility operation and system management in smart factories and buildings.
LS Cable said that carbon fiber cables would be applied widely to electric vehicles, railways, aviation, ships and industrial robots. "It is hard to find the commercialization of carbon fiber cables worldwide," LS Cable president Myung Roh-hyun said in a statement. "We are making efforts to become a 'game changer' in the wire industry with continuous R&D on new materials and eco-friendly products."
