Viola verecunda extracts found to be effective in hair growth and hair loss control

SEOUL -- Extracts of viola verecunda, a species of violet known as hidden violet, were found to be effective in hair growth and hair loss control in a lab experiment conducted by South Korean researchers. It is locally common in Northeast Asia. In oriental medicine, the plant, excluding roots, is used as a medicinal ingredient that is effective in abscess and external injury.

In their joint research with laboratory mice, the state-run Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources (NNIBR) and Jeju National University have confirmed the effects of hair growth and hair loss in the analysis of hidden violet extracts on cells that play an important role in hair follicle formation and hair growth. They have applied for a related patent.

The research team said that the hidden violet extract activates the signal transmission path that regulates cell growth and survival. "With this research, we will discover the various values of our natural life and use them industrially to contribute to the development of the national biological industry," said Chung Sang-chul, an NNIBR researcher.

Follow-up research will be conducted on functional cosmetics as the hidden violent extract had similar or somewhat higher effects than minoxidil, a generic medication used for the treatment of male-pattern hair loss. Minoxidil is less effective when the area of hair loss is large and its effectiveness has largely been demonstrated in younger men who have experienced hair loss for less than five years
