SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has started the mass production of a powerful dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chip for high-end mobile devices which would maximize the 5G communication and artificial intelligence ability of smartphones.

The tech giant said in a statement on Thursday that it has embarked on the mass production of its 12-gigabit LPDDR5 mobile DRAM chip, optimized for 5G mobile devices. Samsung described the new chip as industry's first.

Lee Jung-bae, executive vice president of Samsung's DRAM Product & Technology, said that the mass production of Samsung's latest second-generation 10-nanometer class chip would match the market's growing demands for memory chips with fast data processing speed.

Because many flagship smartphones house artificial intelligence (AI) features which enables devices to understand voice commands in real-time and carry out chores accordingly, they have powerful memory chips. The new chip will be used in the production of 12-gigabyte LPDDR5 chips which would be mass-produced later this month.

To manage production capacity, Samsung said that it would consider moving its 12-gigabit LPDDR5 production to a production base in  Pyeongtaek next year.
