SEOUL -- Based on 5G and virtual reality technology, South Korea's top mobile carrier, SK Telecom, will provide a new broadcasting service through its over-the-top (OTT) channel this week when the professional baseball league opens, promising to provide a new user experience.

Viewers can enjoy high-quality images shot with 4K cameras, SK Telecom (SKT) said Wednesday, adding a wide view function would be applied first to a stadium in the western port city of Incheon. Using virtual reality technology and special cameras, the function allows viewers to experience real-time match videos at 180 degrees and zoom in any places in the stadium.

If 5G mobile services for smartphone users begin in April, SKT plans to introduce a replay function and use mobile transmission technology for fast relay broadcasting together with full high-definition images.

SKT said it would introduce a "time machine" function that can be turned back to the previous scene at will during real-time broadcasting, as well as a multi-view function that allows simultaneous viewing of 10 teams. Through a social VR service, up to eight people in one virtual space can view images on a large screen of over 100 inches. SKT plans to expand its 5G broadcasting service to other sports games.
