SEOUL -- The world's first rollable OLED television, showcased by LG Electronics at a consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, surprised many spectators and IT fans despite doubts among competitors over its high price and economic viability.

The new product proved that TVs can be placed at any places on the floor or on the ceiling, LG's home entertainment division head Kwon Bong-seok said proudly. "It's meaningful because it showed the limits of how far displays can evolve."

However, Kwon admitted the success of rollable TVs would depend on prices. "Rollable TVs are basically OLED TVs, so there is not much cost involved, but we expect costs associated with changing the driving mechanism," he told reporters.

"We will set the price based on how much customers can pay, not the cost plus revenue," Kwon said, adding his company would try to reduce the size of rollable displays. "We are considering the possibility of expanding it to smaller display devices such as tablets, for example."

In general, the rollable TV drew a favorable response from South Korean experts who have strongly criticized LG's smartphone business. They agreed that LG made a remarkable technical breakthrough that can change the picture of the world's projector market.

"This is fantastic! we do not have to see an ugly black box sitting in a corner of a lounge anymore," said Coolshot, a user at Clien, a South Korean community of IT-related experts. Another Clien user nicknamed pickina said: "I think this rollable TV technology will crush the projector market in the future."

"Now LG exactly knows what consumers want! This rollable TV would be a great interior item!" commented CelbicEye.
