LAS VEGAS -- LG Electronics, a global leader in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, defied logic to create the world's first OLED television with a display that can appear and disappear from a base unit at the touch of a remote control button.

The 65-inch LG Signature OLED TV R model with a 4K resolution display was showcased in Las Vegas ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The company plans to release the new TV this year.

"The world's first rollable OLED TV will show the essence of display revolution," LG's home entertainment head Kwon Bong-seok said, touting its rollable OLED TV as a true game-changer that can liberate users from limitations of the wall and free them to curate their own personal space.

LG Electronics plans to release it this year with talks under way with overseas customers, LG Display chief executive Han Sang-beom said, adding the rollable TV's lifespan is the same as other OLED TVs as it can be rolled more than 100,000 times.

Screen sizes have increased as resolution improved and consumers demanded a more immersive viewing experience. In an effort to make large TVs less conspicuous, LG said that manufacturers are trying to create slimmer and unobtrusive screens.

The rollable OLED TV offers three different viewing options. in zero view, the display will be tucked away in the base. Still, users can enjoy music and other audio content through a 4.2-channel Dolby Atmos audio system.

In line view, it can be partially unrolled, allowing users to choose from features such as clock, frame, mood, music and home dashboard. The clock mode can be used to check the time and weather and the frame mode to enjoy family photos shared from a smartphone. The mood mode creates a more relaxing atmosphere.

Full view reveals the full extent of contrast, depth and realism. Users can use their voice to get things done with Amazon Alexa, a new addition to LG's AI TV lineup. With support for Apple's AirPlay 2, users can easily play videos from iTunes and other video apps, music, photos and directly from Apple devices.
