George Lowery, a 50-year-old homeless man in Santee, California, was discovered unconscious on April 24, 2016 in a homeless camp in town by his wife. He was found face-down under a piece of plywood, hogtied.
Lowery was beaten severely by brothers, Austin Mostron and Preston Mostrong. He went into a coma and succumbed to his brain injuries four days later. The beating was so severe that Lowery's brain swelled up inside his skull and killed him.
The statements both brothers gave placed them at the crime scene. Preston Mostrong later admitted beating Lowery and throwing him into the bush.
Austin Mostrong, 22, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon on Friday. He will be sentenced to 20 years in prison. His younger brother Preston Mostrong, 21, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and mayhem. He will be sentenced to 24 years in prison. The official sentencing is scheduled for January 12, 2018.
