A new external solid-state drive (SSD), the size of a name card, produced by Samsung Electronics has received a positive market response for showing a faster data speed than traditional hard disk drives.
Currently, USB or memory sticks are widely used to store and transfer data but portable hard disk drives (HDDs) are also frequently used to handle a large amount of data like unedited video files and images.
The external drive market is now led by global companies such as Western Digital, Toshiba and Seagate. Normally, external drives are fitted with hard disk drives but the world's top microchip maker released the first generation of external SSDs in 2014.
T5, Samsung's latest external SSD weighing only 51 grams (1.7 ounces) used technology to make V-NAND flash chips. It can store more data fast and use less electricity. The SSD is 74 millimeters (2.9 inches) wide and 57.3 millimeters long and its casing is about a centimeter thick.
T5's data reading and writing speed is about five times faster than conventional external HDD drives. Samsung said it is capable of storing a 3GB FHD movie in seven seconds.
"Our previous model, T3, released last year, led the portable SSD market backed by positive reaction from consumers," Samsung said. "We will provide a new external drive solution with the global launching of T5."
Global HDD and external HDD markets have seen a constant decrease in shipments in the last decade as consumers turn to cloud data storage services rather than to physically store data. However, demand for SSDs get strong and the value of the global SSD market is predicted to reach about 250 billion US dollars by 2022.
