Mariatrost Basilica in Graz is the most famous pilgrimage churches in Styria state in Austria. It had attracted many pilgrims all over Europe because of its holy shrine of Virgin Mary. A story of the Virgin Mary shrine curing sicknesses had spread widely and drawing people in nearby countries to pay a visit.
The basilica sits on top of Purberg hill in Mariatrost district of Graz. It was commissioned to be built in 1714 by the order of Saint Paul. It took the architect Andreas Stengg and his son Johann Georg Stengg 10 years to complete the baroque beauty.
The church boasts beautiful frescoes done by artists Lukas von Schram and Johann Baptist Scheidt and a masterpiece pulpit created by Veit Koniger.
It was bestowed the title Basilica in 1999 by Pope John Paul II.
