Uber plans to jump into South Korea's thriving mobile food delivery market as its taxi hailing service remained stagnant due to legal hurdles and competition with a cab-hail app launched by Kakao Talk, the country's largest mobile messenger app.

Uber Technologies in Seoul said its online meal ordering and delivery platform, UberEATS, would begin its service, providing no time frame. The platform partners with restaurants in dozens of cities around the world.

The US cab-hailing app operator suspended its key ride-sharing service in South Korea in March 2015 due to stiff resistance from taxi drivers and city authorities. It came back last year with its premium taxi service, Uber Black, in Seoul.

The domestic mobile delivery industry, dominated by three major services -- Baedal Minjok, Yogiyo and Baedaltong, faces a tough competition as Kakao with more than 42 million monthly active users at home added a "Place an order" tab to its messenger.
