San Francisco, USA - UCLA Law student, Dyne Suh, was looking forward to a weekend getaway with her fiance, two friends, and their dogs at a cozy cabin in Running Springs, Califonia. She booked the cabin through Airbnb, a popular home-sharing service.
However, her perfect weekend plan turned into a nightmare when the Airbnb host of the cabin canceled her reservation minutes before their arrival because she is Asian.
A reporter from KTLA, a news, and media company located in Los Angeles, happened to be int the area interviewed her. In the interview video, Suh could be seen explaining her encounter in tears. Suh showed the texts that were exchanged between the host and herself.
The host wrote, "Go ahead. I wouldn't rent to u if u were the last person on earth," and added, "One word says it all. Asian". When Suh texted, "I will report to Airbnb that you are racist", the host replied, "Go ahead. It's why we have Trump. I will not allow this country to be told what to do by foreigners."
Airbnb fully reimbursed on the same night, and the group could find an alternate place to stay. Also, the company permanently banned the host.
The incident happened on February 17 this year, but after NBC Los Angeles featured her story on Thursday, Suh's news went viral.
Suh explained, she is an American citizen and had been living in U.S. since she was three years old. She is currently studying Critical Race Studies at UCLA School of Law.
When NBC LA's reporter Hetty Chang reached out to the host, she said, "No comment", and hung up on Chang.
