Samsung Electronics Thursday unveiled the world's first eight-gigabyte mobile DRAM package featuring more efficient power consumption that could be used for the company's next Galaxy S smartphone.
Samsung said its new 8GB LPDDR4 (Low Power Double Data Rate 4) mobile DRAM would provide mobile devices with the same performance as its larger PC-compatible DRAM brothers.
The company said the new DRAM package would allow smartphones and tablets to run 4K video and other high-performance programs flawlessly.
The mobile DRAM, as its name suggests, is the ideal choice for mobile devices. While it provides mobile users with top-of-the-line performance, it consumes less power, ensuring a longer battery life.
Current flagship smartphones are installed with 4GB DRAM used for Samsung's Galaxy Note 7, which has been removed from the shelves due to exploding batteries.
Samsung expects its 8GB DRAM will become the new trend. "We will expand the shipment of 8GB DRAM to match the global release of next-generation flagship smartphones," said a Samsung official.
With Samsung's announcement, many experts speculate the company's next flagship will feature the new 8GB DRAM when it is released sometime in early 2017. Samsung would probably be the first smartphone maker to create a mobile device with maximum DRAM capacity.
