South Korean Military plans to develop Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) as a form of counter attack to North Korea’s long-range artillery, the official said on Sunday.

The UAV in development will be a stealth vehicle and if projects go as planned, will be available for deployment in a few years. Its main task will be monitoring the North’s artillery and missile sites. Also when force is necessary, the UAV will destroy the sites beforehand to prevent severe damages on the nation’s capital, Seoul.

According to the military official, UAV will keep its flying altitude higher than the North Korean aerial defenses’ detecting range, and will be fitted with 240mm multiple rocket launchers and 170mm self-propelled guns ready to engage when a potential threat is detected.

The Agency of Defense development will invest KR\ 380 million as an initial part of the project.

The military foresees that the project will be an effective one. “Large targets like long range missile sites will be taken down directly by the UAV.” The official said. “For smaller targets, it will be identified and be taken down with several precise attacks.”

U.S. Military is one of the few who use the UAV or drones effectively in combat. Fitted with various optical devices, UAVs are able to identify and attack a target with great precision from long distances.

UAV is very effective since it’s unmanned, therefore it can be deployed into hot zones where if soldiers are deployed, casualty is expected without any risks of personnel damage.
