The last MERS patient in Korea passed away from after effects of the disease followed by complications, Wednesday
The patient, who was admitted to Samsung Hospital last June, was diagnosed with MERS. While struggling with blood cancer, the patient later was discharged from the hospital after tests showing negative results for MERS.
But eight days later, he was re-hospitalized for showing symptoms of the disease. He fought the disease for a span of 172 days, which is the longest period of a person had ever fought the disease in the world.
MERS patients were first recognized in Korea last May. The disease infected a total of 187 people in South Korea. 38 people died during treatment. Since there are no more MERS patients left in Korea, the health authorities are planning to announce the official end to MERS next month.
