The family members of those still missing in the deadly sinking of the ferry Sewol in mid-April have voted against salvaging the ship, a lawyer representing the families said Monday. In a vote conducted a day earlier, four families voted for the recovery of the vessel, while five others did not, the lawyer, Bae Ui-cheol, said. The salvage of the ship required a two-thirds quorum.
Bae urged the government to continue its search operation for the missing passengers.
The 6,825-ton vessel sank in waters off the country’s southwestern island of Jindo. Of the 476 people aboard, 10 passengers remain unaccounted for.
