"Roaring Currents," a South Korean box-office hit about a 16th-century naval hero who defeated Japanese invaders in the late 16th century, will be shown at about 3,000 theaters across China, its distributor in Seoul said Monday.

China Film Group (CFG), the country's largest state-run movie distributor, will be in charge of distribution in China, according to CJ E&M.

Since August, the film has been exported to a total of 13 countries, including Taiwan, India, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. It was released in Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, CJ E&M said.

According to historical records, Adm. Yi Sun-sin and his 12 “Turtle Ships” won a crushing victory over a fleet of 133 in 1597 during Japanese Hideyoshi’s invasion of the Korean Peninsula (1592-1598).
