On Saturday alone, the movie attracted about 1.23 million moviegoers, the largest daily audience in the country’s film history, according to its local distributor, CJ Entertainment.
It broke the previous daily record of 956,500 ticket sales set by U.S. science-fiction film “Transformer 3.”
“Roaring Currents" also broke new records, including biggest opening with about 680,000 viewers and highest number of single weekday visitors with some 700,000 viewers.
In just six days since its release, the movie drew more than 5 million moviegoers - 5,011,256, CJ said.
The film starring veteran actor Choi Min-sik (“Old Boy”) is about Adm. Yi Sun-sin, one of the most revered figures in Korean history who defeated Japanese Hideyoshi’s invasion of Korea (1592-1598).
