Suarez scores twice to give Uruguay 2-1 victory over England

Uruguay defeated England 2-1 in a Group D preliminary match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup at the Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo on Thursday (local time) to keep alive their hopes of advancing to the Round of 16.

About a month after undergoing surgery for a meniscus in his left knee, Uruguay’s forward Luis Suarez scored twice, including the decisive 2-1 goal in the 85th minute.

Suarez scored his side’s first goal in the 39th minute, and England's striker Wayne Rooney scored the 1-1 equalizer in the 75th minute.

Uruguay was defeated 1-3 by Costa Rica in their opener of Group D, a “group of death.” It will face Italy on June 25.

England, which is now on the brink of elimination with two defeats out of two, will play against Costa Rica on the same day. England was defeated 1-2 by Italy in their group opener.
