South Korean department stores said Tuesday they posted robust Lunar New Year holiday sales for the third consecutive year this year, thanks to strong demand from Chinese customers.

Lotte Department Store, one of the country’s three biggest department stores, said its sales to Chinese buyers between Jan. 31 and Feb. 9 jumped up by 125 percent from the corresponding period of last year.

The Spring Festival or Lunar New Year holiday is China’s most important annual holiday.

Lotte said that during the 10-day period, sales to Chinese customers accounted for 80 percent of its total sales to foreign buyers.

Chinese customers’ favorite brands included MCM, Cartier, Chanel, Tiffani, Vacheron Constantin and Louis Vuitton, Lotte said. Also included in the top 10 favorite brands among Chinese buyers was Style Nanda, one of the leading street wear fashion brands.

Shinsegae Department Store's sales to Chinese customers also skyrocketed 173.8 percent around this year's Spring Festival from a year ago, company officials said.

The number of Chinese visitors to the Shinsegae store in Myeong-dong, central Seoul, during the period rose more than 2.5-fold from a year ago, they said.
