A U.S. state legislature Tuesday (local time) adopted a resolution describing the Korean Peninsula as "bound by its East and West Seas,“ which is construed as a symbolic step to support South Koreans’ campaign to publicize the name East Sea for the body of water between Korea and Japan.

The Senate of the state of Georgia unanimously passed the resolution patroned by Sen. David Shafer, a Republican.

The resolution, named SR 798, notes that South Korea is "one of the strongest allies and closest trading partners of the United States."

Last week, the Senate of Virginia approved a bill which requires approved textbooks in the U.S. state to identify the waters between Korea and Japan as the East Sea as well as the Sea of Japan.

Koreans see the name Sea of Japan as a legacy of Japan's colonial rule Korea (1910-1945).
