The Academy has tallied 289 feature films eligible for the 2014 best picture Oscar. To be in contention, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in L.A. County by midnight, Dec. 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.

The Academy’s rules state that features must be over 40 minutes, and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format, so considering the epic length of films today, many of the top awards contenders won’t have to worry. The full list of contenders is after the jump.

It also announced the 75 songs that will be eligible for a best original song nomination, including many from the Great Gatsby soundtrack by artists like Lana Del Rey and Jay Z.

Feature films that receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release are not eligible for Academy Awards in any category.

The "Reminder List of Productions Eligible for the 86th Academy Awards" is available at www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/reminderlist.html.

Last year, 282 films were eligible for the best picture Oscar. A maximum of 10 films can be nominated for best picture. According to Academy rules instated in 2011, the total number of best picture nominees can be anywhere between five and 10. Nine films were nominated for best picture in the 85th Academy Awards.

This year, “12 Years A Slave,” “American Hustle,” “The Wolf of Wall Street and Gravity” are just a few of the films expected to be in the running for best picture.

There will also be 75 songs eligible for the best original song category, which went to Adele and Paul Epworth for the title song of “Skyfall” last year.

Many of these songs include tracks by popular artists, mostly thanks to their contributions to Baz Luhrmann’s “Gatsby.” Jay Z’s “100$ Bill” and Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” could get a nomination. Coldplay’s “Atlas” from “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is also eligible. The eligible song from Disney’s “Frozen” is “Let It Go.”

The Academy has strict rules for the original song category, noting that the track’s melody must be heard during the film and the song has to be heard at the beginning of the end credits.

Although the Coen Brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” has been acclaimed for its T Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, it doesn’t feature original songs and is ineligible. There will also be 114 scores up for a best original score nomination.

The 86th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
