The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has begun preparations to open a Hangeul (Korean alphabet) Museum in the premises of the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul, sometime next year.

The ministry established a 30-member Hangeul Museum inauguration committee on Thursday. The committee, including hangeul experts, is chaired by Hong Yoon-pyo, a former professor of Yonsei University.

A total of 32.6 billion won has been set aside to construct the three-story Hangeul Museum with one basement. The museum will have combined floor space of 11,322 square meters.

To date, the ministry has collected about 7,450 artifacts through donations, and purchased 1,176 relics, ministry officials said.

Hangeul was invented by King Sejong the Great, the fourth monarch of Joseon (1392-1910), an ancient Korean kingdom. Sejong ruled the kingdom from 1418 to 1450.
