아주경제 송지영 기자=The ministry of South Korea showed that a recent survey showed that 83 percent of respondents support Hangeul Day as a public Holiday.

At 83 percent, this survey was higher than in previous ones. One thousand adults were interviewed through the telephone between April 13 and 15, Yonhap news reported.

Of those polled, 57.5 percent thought Hangeul Day more important than other commemorative days such as Constitution Day
(15.4 percent), Arbor Day (12.2 percent) and Armed Forces Day (8.2percent).

Hangeul Day is observed on Oct. 9 to mark the invention and proclamation of the Korean alphabet in 1446.

Four years after being liberated from Japanese rule, South Korea made it an official holiday in order to preserve the language.
