Kim Sang-hong, honorary chairman of Samyang Group who helped develop the group into a conglomerate focused on food, died of old age in a Seoul hospital on Monday, the group said. He was 88.

Born in 1923, Kim joined Samyang Corp., the group's now de facto holding company, in 1947. He aggressively expanded the company's business portfolio by launching a sugar manufacturing business in the 1950s, and a chemicals business in the 1960s, which became the group's mainstay businesses.

He served as vice president of the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI), the country's leading business lobby, from 1983 to 1993. He also established a number of scholarship foundations.

The group has Samyang Foods Co., the country's second-largest producer of instant noodles, and other affiliates under its wing.

Kim is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.//Yonhap
