During the last decade, South Korea faced new types of crimes involving the illegal trafficking of drugs and unapproved trading of cryptocurrency. Because the plotting of such criminal activities is carried out through online spaces, it is difficult for police to predict, monitor, and prevent criminal activities.
The National Police Agency said that the law enforcers developed a plan to adopt and apply the latest technologies such as AI to criminal investigation. The four-year plan to develop the crime prediction and monitoring system control tower will kick off in 2024.
The control tower will be used for the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera monitoring of out-of-ordinary activities in public areas and possible cases of people carrying weapons. The system could also be used for the development of algorithms that could analyze patterns of stalking and sexual assault crimes.
The police said that the gathering, analyzing, and processing of information by the control tower will be carried out after related private information laws and policies are established.
