SEOUL -- Tmap Mobility, a smart mobility solution wing of South Korea's SK Group, will provide Volvo's new electric vehicle EX90 with a self-developed high-definition map and advanced driver assistant system. The autonomous driving technology solutions will help Volvo's EV safely navigate its way around roads in South Korea.

A high-definition (HD) map is a highly accurate map that contains just about every detail which is not normally provided by ordinary maps. The digital map containing the location of on-road structures such as light poles and pedestrian crossings helps autonomous cars navigate more safely. An advanced driver assistant (ADAS) system is a support system that assists drivers to brake and stop their cars in unexpected situations.

Tmap Mobility said that EX90, a full-electric sport utility vehicle produced by Volvo, will house the South Korean mobility solution maker's HD map and ADAS systems. Tmap said that its HD map is about ten times more accurate than ordinary maps used for navigation services. The digital map can help cars recognize on-road structures such as the median strip and prevent accidents by avoiding the nearside lane.

"To improve the accuracy and stability of autonomous driving technologies, we will continue to provide HD maps using an online streaming technique. We will cooperate with carmakers so that Tmap's HD map can become the 'core brain' for automotive manufacturers who seek to upgrade their self-driving technologies," Tmap Mobility's Future Mobility Division head Park Seo-ha said in a statement on January 9.
